Be A Local Tourist

People love to travel and discover. The thrill of exploring a new place and the reward of that experience is forever stored away in our minds (or in a thousand photos!). But we don’t have to go far and wide for this experience. Sometimes these exciting places are right next door to us without even realising.

When we’re touring another state or country we explore as many places as we can jam into each day. When we live close to these places the temptation is to say ‘I’ll go next week’ but the reality is that you never end up going.

So today we’re asking you to be a tourist. Explore your local area and go to those places you keep putting off. With summer just around the corner it’s the perfect time to start planning a trip or two, or have a spontaneous idea up your sleeve!

To get you started we’ve put together a list of some beautiful, fun and interesting places you might want to visit around our Palm Lake Resorts:

Sunshine Coast

Noosa Botanic Gardens

Lake Macdonald QLD 4563

6 minute drive from our Cooroy Resort – coming soon.

Featuring an open-air bush chapel, a fern house and an amphitheatre that looks out on the spectacular Lake Macdonald you will be surprised at the beauty of what used to be the site of a rubbish dump. There are also opera performances in the amphitheatre, view Operatif’s website here to see when they are performing next.

Entry to the Botanic Gardens is free.

Reef World Aquarium

On the beach Dayman Park, Cnr Kent & Pulgul St, Urangan, Hervey Bay 4655

20 minutes from our Hervey Bay Resort.

Set on the foreshores of Hervey Bay the natural aquarium offers unique displays of marine life and opportunities to touch the marine life or if you’re feeling daring – have a swim with the sharks!

Brisbane Riverwalk

From New Farm (1 Riverview Court, end of Merthyr Road) to Howard Smith Wharves, which connects with the riverside boardwalk to Brisbane’s CBD and passes the Botanic Gardens.

25 minutes from our Carindale Resort and 30-40 minutes from our Bethania, Waterford, Eagleby and Mt Warren Resorts.

Take a stroll along the beautiful Brisbane River on a sunny morning or afternoon with your loved ones or even for some time out by yourself. Keep an eye out for the little red ferry known as the CityHopper, which will take you to the key tourist spots in the city or simply enjoy the ride. Best of all, its completely FREE to hop on and off as you please!

Cobb & Co Tourist Drive

Warrego Highway, Gatton, QLD, 4343

The 1 hour and 15 minute drive goes between Toowoomba (perfect for our Toowoomba Resort) and Ipswich, 45-50 minutes from our Carindale, Bethania and Waterford Resorts.

For those who like to drive, this historic tour takes you along the original route between Toowoomba and Ipswich that the Cobb & Co Royal Mail coach took more than 140 years ago. Simply follow the wagon wheel signs and stop at the marked staging posts in Rosewood, Forest Hill and Gatton. Also at Toowoomba is the Cobb & Co Museum.

Gold Coast

Tamborine Wine Tours

Pick up from Gold Coast Area around 9:45am, returning at 4:30pm.

Enjoy a day tour of visits to 3 or 4 wineries, Tamborine Mountain Distillery, Cheese Factory and Mount Tamborine Brewery. Or choose to do your own tour with a number of wineries in the Tamborine region, which is a 30-minute drive from our Upper Coomera Palm Lake Resort.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

28 Tomewin Street, Currumbin, QLD, 4223

15 minutes from our Tweed River and Banora Point Resorts.

A great place to bring the grandchildren and be surrounded by Australian animals. There’s plenty to do at Currumbin with numerous animal feedings, a bird show and an Aboriginal dance show. And even better, there’s a small train to take you from place to place within the park.

Northern New South Wales

Bundjalung National Park

A 20 minute drive from our Yamba Resort and 40 minutes from our Ballina Resort.

Bundjalung National Park offers access to spectacular waterways from the beach, to rivers and freshwater lagoons. You can hire a canoe, go snorkeling or take a walk along Ten Mile Beach or through the rainforest to beautiful views at Iluka Bluff.

Park entry fees: $8 per vehicle per day (annual passes also available)

Macadamia Castle

1699 Pacific Highway, Knockrow, NSW, 2479

Less than 15 minutes from our Ballina Resort.

More than macadamias, this park also has animals, reptiles, mini golf, a small train and a café with famous macadamia infused beef burger. There’s plenty to see and do here so it’s the perfect place to go with your grandchildren and enjoy delicious macadamias!

Tickets: Adult $19.50, Concession $14, Child 6-16 yrs $14, Child 2-5 yrs $11 (6 month and 12 month unlimited entry passes available)

Southern Victoria

Werribee Mansion

Gate 2, K Road, Werribee, VIC, 3030

About 20 minutes from our Truganina Resort.

Explore the magnificent 1877 mansion with its original Victorian period interiors. Outside it is surrounded by 10 hectares of gardens for a relaxing walk or somewhere to sit for a picnic. Within walking distance is the award winning Victoria State Rose Garden.

Entry into the gardens is free.

Tickets for entry to the mansion: Adult $9.60, Concession $7.10, Child $7.10, Family (2 adult + 2 child) $30.50.

Little Penguin Parade on Phillip Island

1019 Ventnor Road, Summerlands, VIC, 3922

About 10 minutes from our Phillip Island Resort and around 20 minutes from our Truganina Resort.

See the world’s smallest penguins each night at sunset from a number of viewing stands and boardwalks on Summerland Beach or take a VIP tour. There are also interactive displays in the visitor centre to learn a bit about these little penguins.
